A History of The Actors Studio. Written by Andreas Manolikakis. The Actors Studio was founded in New York by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis in 1947. For seven decades it has been devoted to the service and development of theatre artists –actors, directors and playwrights.
The Actors Studio’s legacy is profound and unique in the history of American Theatre and Film. Our alumni include many renowned, acclaimed, beloved artists – actors, writers, and directors who have left their mark on the world’s stage.
The Actors Studio helps professional actors, directors, and playwrights hone their craft and explore the depth and breadth of their talent. Based on exercises and techniques developed here by Lee Strasberg and others, The Actors Studio is ‘the home of method acting.’.
Audition Process. All members of The Actors Studio have been invited into membership after passing successfully through a series of auditions. Any professional actor over 18 years of age is eligible to audition. This consists of a five-minute scene.
Membership Benefits. Once admitted to membership, the actor is free to use all the facilities of the Studios, both in New York and in Los Angeles. Members of The Studio enjoy a number of luxuries not usually available to actors in the commercial theatre.
