  1. May 17, 2021 · The Aeneid, Virgil's hero fights to claim the king’s daughter, Lavinia, with whom he is destined to found an empire. Lavinia herself never speaks a word. Now, Ursula K. Le Guin gives Lavinia a voice in a novel that takes us to the half-wild world of ancient Italy, when Rome was a muddy village near seven hills.

  2. Apr 19, 2021 · Pg. 84- I listened and did not speak. Achilles’ eyes were bright in the firelight, his face drawn sharply by flickering shadows. I would know it in dark or disguise, I told myself. I would know it even in madness. Pg. 102- I Will never leave him. It will be this, always, for as long as he will let me.

  3. The plot from Song of Achilles is loosely based on the Iliad by Homer (which is a very dense, very violent "epic poem") as later examined by Plato and Socrates. The Iliad is the "prequel" to the better known epic poem "the Odyssey" (which is still not an approachable read in its direct translation, but retold a million times in pop-culture).

  4. The first thing we need to know about The Song of Achilles is that it is a retelling of The Iliad. The Iliad is an epic poem from ancient Greece that tells part of the story of the Trojan War – we’ll talk about that later. The Iliad – and it’s companion piece, The Odyssey – are the foundation of western literature and are the earliest ...

  5. Apr 30, 2020 · Song of Achilles is more of a romance, and generally more eventful than Circe because the main characters aren’t in prison. I don’t like romance but I loved the romance in this book, and it’s the main appeal of the book. If you appreciate Greek mythology, you should read it, it’s a very good “adaptation” of sorts. Reply.

  6. Jun 6, 2022 · The Song of Achilles tries so hard to be queer and multi racial that it ends up as fetishy, such as when the narration describes Achilles's skin as "the color of fresh olive oil." This sounds like the author is fetishizing "non whiteness," and it's cringe to describe "non white" ethnicitites with references to that culture's food, this is an inch away from calling a Hispanic woman a spicy chimichanga.

  7. Mar 18, 2021 · I enjoyed the book, but it's biggest selling point is that you get to make the 1000th post on this sub about having finished it and "being emotionally destroyed" or "wow just wow". If you don't like it, it's okay to cut your losses and move on. (Plus, you won't make one of those posts, which is a win for humanity. 34.

  8. Nov 11, 2020 · Jacob elordi as achilles. Joaquin phoenix as Odysseus. Guys, most depictions of Patroclus are fairly dark-skinned. I don’t think Timothee Chalamet or Tom Holland are the right look here — they’re too much like European Disney prince looks already, and that’s more Achilles’ look.

  9. Aug 11, 2021 · At the end of the day, he's definitely on the homosexual side of he Kinsey scale and Achilles is the love of his life, but he had a special relationship with Briseis that lived in some sort of love grey area - like you could read it as strictly platonic/familial love, but I felt like there was a drop or two implied that it was something else, esp with the line about how maybe in another life, if he'd never met Achilles he would've married Briseis and had children with her.

  10. Dec 15, 2020 · Cerci was my favorite of the two (they're both amazing) but song of Achilles should be read first, It was Madeline Miller's first book and reading them in the order of song of Achilles to Cerci follows the plotline of one of the characters in the books chronology! Edit: It doesn't really matter, both books are standalone in their own right, but ...
