Soil pollution is the contamination of the soil with pollutants, toxic chemicals or any contaminant in such a quantity that reduces soil quality and makes it inhabitable to organisms such as insects and other microbes.
There are four main routes of exposure to soil contaminants: i) accidental ingestion of contaminated food, dust, and polluted soil particles, ii) intentional ingestion of soil, iii) inhalation of soil particles, contaminated dust and vapours, indoors and outdoors, and iv) dermal contact (Figure 15).
