Sittanavasal Cave (also, Arivar Koil) is a 2nd-century Tamil Śramaṇa complex of caves in Sittanavasal village in Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu, India. [2][3] Its name is a distorted form of Sit-tan-na-va-yil, a Tamil word which means "the abode of great saints" (Tamil: சித்தன்னவாசல்). The monument is a rock-cut monastery or temple.

Sittannavasal† is known primarily for its mural paintings in the Jaina rock-cut cave temple called Arivar-koil†. These paintings are second only in importance after Ajanta paintings in the art history of India. There is a natural cavern, called Ezhadippattam†, with polished rock beds of Jaina ascetics. These rock beds contain Tamil inscriptions.

May 2, 2011 · Sittanavasal is the earliest example of Jaina paintings. These paintings came into the attention of scholars after an inscription was published in ARE (Annual Report of Epigraphy) 1904. An earliest study was carried out by Venkataranga Raju , the then curator of the Pudukkottai Museum , who made water color reproductions of these murals in 1910.
