Jul 22, 2022 · 11. A post doc is just a job. It is a way for a recent doctoral recipient to extend their research so as to become more employable in general, usually in seeking an academic position. There is nothing like a degree "awarded" for a postdoc. An office and a paycheck and access to other researchers, but little else.
The Post-Doctoral Fellow is paid through a different funding mechanism (e.g., NRSA training grants) and is not considered an employee (thus is excluded from health insurance and retirement benefits) and is treated more like a student (may take classes or do a clinical residency; receives a non-negotiable stipend which is not ordinary income). There may be a citizenship requirement for this funding mechanism.
Dec 3, 2020 · Sometimes a title including post-doc or similar title (e.g., post-doctoral fellow) requires the person be within X-years of their terminal degree. Conversely, as noted by others, research fellows or similar title can be permanent positions, be programs or even titles for experienced scientists, or be visiting programs for distinguished faculty and researchers from other places.

When I got my first postdoc (in the US), I did it this way. In fact three profs offered me an interview, one turned me down after interview, one offered to support me to write a fellowship, and a final prof gave me a 2 year position on the understanding I used that time to apply for fellowships.

The more traditional Chinese post-doctoral fellowship offers you a government-recognised certificate at the end of training. The more "Western" style does not. There are additional differences having to do with employment, benefits and such that are too individual to list here.

There are certain postdoctoral researcher positions that are positions in a PI's group where one works under a professor or more permanent faculty. A fellowship in the UK system means one has research independence and is allowed to pursue her own research program freely.
