Starlight. Phosphor is more popular because it's written by the same author as Lithium and Sodium, but Starlight is better. Orders of magnitude faster and I've never had a lighting glitch with it. It's surprisingly stable despite being "Experimental". Terrain generation is noticeably faster with Starlight over Phosphor.
For a closed source mod the process is more involved: open a report in both repos, hope the developers have time and capacity to work together to identify the issue, whether that's the performance mod expanding an API to accommodate the other mod or giving the other mod developer instructions to do something in a different way that isn't as problematic.

Dec 27, 2021 · You are going to have to choose between Phosphor or Starlight. Depending on what mods you use the decision might be made for you. Phosphor has more compatibility with mods. Starlight will give better performance.

Nov 29, 2022 · Starlight is generally more compatible AND performant than phosphor. Reply. I am currently trying to improve performance on a fabric based vanillaish server. (1.19.2) And from what I can see Starlight seems to be rather good….
Jun 28, 2023 · No phosphor is a nod that improves the lighting mechanics of the game. You don't need it from 1.20 onwards because ethe lighting mechanics does not cause much lag, dynamics light is not given by phosphor. Please learn about the mod before saying anything about it.
