Neonatal deaths (deaths among live births during the first 28 completed days of life) may be subdivided into early neonatal deaths, occurring during the first 7 days of life, and late neonatal deaths, occurring after the 7th day but before the 28th completed day of life.
May 21, 2024 · Neonatal mortality rates are calculated using the number of neonatal deaths and the number of live births over a period. For civil registration data, initially annual observations were constructed for all observation years in a country.
The denominator of the neonatal mortality rate, like that of the infant mortality rate, is the number of live births reported during the same time period. The neonatal mortality rate is usually expressed per 1,000 live births.
Jul 6, 2024 · For an infant mortality rate calculation, we use the formula: nfant mortality rate = deaths among children / live births × 10ⁿ, where both deaths among children and live births are measured within the same time period. This formula is valid for infant, postneonatal, and neonatal mortality rates.
The following formula will define infant mortality rate: \[IMR = \frac{\text{No.of deaths of children less than one year of age}}{\text{Number of live births in the same year}} \times 1000\] (Image will be uploaded soon)
The neonatal mortality rate can be considered a measure of overall development and directly reflects prenatal, intrapartum and neonatal care. Children face the highest risk of dying in their first month of life and the neonatal period accounts for a large proportion of child deaths.
Formula: Neonatal mortality rate = Number of neonatal deaths Total number of live births × 1000. Note: Crude divorce rates are tabulated using occurrence data rather than residence data. Crude marriage rates are tabulated using both occurrence and residence data.

Globally, the average annual rate of reduction in the neonatal mortality rate was 2.4 per cent from 1990 to 2022, a smaller reduction than among children aged 1–59 months with 3.3 per cent. As a result, the share of neonatal deaths among all under-five deaths increased from 41 per cent in 1990 to 47 per cent in 2022.
