Methylated-DNA--protein-cysteine methyltransferase (MGMT), also known as O 6-alkylguanine DNA alkyltransferase AGT, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MGMT gene. MGMT is crucial for genome stability.
Apr 3, 2024 · The protein encoded by this gene is a DNA repair protein that is involved in cellular defense against mutagenesis and toxicity from alkylating agents. The protein catalyzes transfer of methyl groups from O (6)-alkylguanine and other methylated moieties of the DNA to its own molecule, which repairs the toxic lesions.
O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is a DNA repair enzyme that removes the guanine-alkyl group induced by alkylating agents such as temozolomide. The meta-analysis indicated the association between MGMT promoter hypermethylation and squamous intraepithelial lesion and cervical cancer.
Jan 17, 2020 · O 6 -methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase, known as MGMT, is a DNA “suicide” repair enzyme. It repairs damaged guanine nucleotides by transferring the methyl at O 6 site of guanine to its cysteine residues, thus avoiding gene mutation, cell death and tumorigenesis caused by alkylating agents.

While O 6 -methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status is accepted as a prognostic and promising predictive biomarker in glioblastoma, its value in informing treatment decisions for glioblastoma patients is still debatable.

Apr 1, 2004 · MGMT is a DNA-repair gene. MGMT has been studied for over 20 years as a gene that is associated with methylating-agent resistance in both prokaryotes 21 and in human cells 22.
O6 -Methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is a suicide enzyme that repairs the pre-mutagenic, pre-carcinogenic and pre-toxic DNA damage O6 -methylguanine. It also repairs larger adducts on the O6 -position of guanine, such as O (6)- [4-oxo-4- (3-pyridyl)butyl]guanine and O6 -chloroethylguanine.
