The Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) (lit. 'Great Wheel of Bravery') is the second highest military decoration in India, after the Param Vir Chakra, and is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air. It replaced the British Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
Post-independence, first three gallantry awards namely Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra and Vir Chakra were instituted by the Government of India on 26th January, 1950 which were deemed to have effect from the 15th August, 1947.

Nov 30, 1999 · The Maha Vir Chakra is the second highest wartime gallantry award. The Award is less in precedence only to the Param Vir Chakra. Only nineteen IAF personnel ever received the Maha Vir Chakra in four wars and numerous actions since 1947.
For these acts of gallantry and outstanding leadership in the face of the enemy, Major Hari Chand was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. In 1962, Lieutenant Colonel Hari Chand MVC was commanding a battalion, which was responsible for the defence of the airfield at Chushul.
