In most of the programming language, when there're same-name variables defined among different scopes, it always use innermost scope's declaration first. If Java is not this case, I can only say Java is a "weird" programming language. >"< –

  4. Local variables and primitives should be initialized before use because you would know what to expect from the values. Historically, when a new variable was created it would contain random values from the memory [and one could not predict the value]. Java also requires this because it prevents the presence of orphaned variables.

  10. Jan 21, 2016 · I believe your question contradicts itself. If warning text says "local variable", then it's not a field and cannot be declared private. The warning for a private field would say "The value of the field is not used". Well, at least that's what Eclipse does. –
