Nov 1, 2020 · Doom was always a series where story wasn't much of a big deal until the reboot games or even 3, but it was mostly known for "story doesn't matter, gameplay comes first". Still, you'd play these games on release order and look up in-game texts or official instructions manuals if you want to know more about the setting.

DooM 3 is best played either first or dead last because its story/plot is separated from the rest of the series. Don't touch Master Levels of DooM II.

Generally if you want the more modern “rip and tear” experience play Doom (2016) then Doom Eternal, and if you want the classic doom experience play Doom and then Doom II: Hell on Earth (doom 1 is usually sold as The Ultimate Doom on stores due to the main retail release of doom 1 being The Ultimate Doom).

Jun 6, 2023 · DOOM 3 takes place in 2145. DOOM 2016 takes place in 2149. DOOM Eternal's exact date is unknown, but takes place some number of years after DOOM 2016's date of 2149. AtimZarr1 has great posts about the confusion around its exact date here and here. Usually, it's release order and some titles don't count but it's a series where gameplay is key.
Sep 1, 2020 · It's not bad, but it really shouldnt be in the series because it's basically just a jump scare horror game. 1,2, 64, 2016, eternal. Out of all of them, I'd rank em: Eternal 2 2016 64 1. I too, wish there was a more cohesive answer for this.

A cool thing is that you need to play old-school Doom games in chronological order if you don't want to hit a difficulty wall. Ultimate Doom is the final version of the first Doom, which add a fourth harder bonus episode (Thy Flesh Consumed, 9 levels). There isn't a lot of story, but I'd recommend playing 2016 then Eternal as Eternal is pretty tough and balanced around people who are already competent are doom. You don't need to play anything before 2016, tho.
