Improve this question. I want to write the $ symbol in my LaTeX file. I tried \$ and also \textdollar. In both cases the dollar sign is printed but I am getting an alert. I am using Sharelatex to compile the code. Edit: Sorry but the problem was not the $, its a \foodnote with _ symbol. Problem solved by adding \ before each _ symbol.

May 21, 2015 · I was always taught that the dollar sign was originally created as a superposition of "U" and "S", a uniquely American symbol. Thus, for a really old version of the symbol, I build it here from scratch. Here, I show the serif and sans versions of the "S".

Dec 23, 2016 · No. Really, no! $ ... $ is the TeX way of entering math mode - specifically, inline math mode. What this means is that it puts you in a mode configured perfectly for mathematics - not italic text. Using $ ... $ to italicise text will produce some very bad results.

\smaller yields a smaller dollar sign than \relsize{-0.5} (and the dollar sign produced by the latter looks superior in terms of size to my eyes). If I zoom to 500% in my PDF viewer and measure, the unmodified $ is 38pt high, the \relsize{-0.5} and the {\small\$} are both 34pt high, and the \smaller sign is 30pt high.
