Aug 14, 2021 · 1. It happens on other Word documents. For example, a docx file I saved as an ADF/A pdf on June 29th now gives me the sorry message (see attached screen shot). I believe this is the last time I saved a doc as a pdf with the ADF/A checked. 2. My system setup is the same. The only changes in the last month are from Windows Updates (see attached).

Start by simply opening the pdf in Word which will use Word's conversion algorithm. If you can find the source file that created the PDF and attempt to edit that, you will be far ahead of the game. Documents converted from a different program's file structure will always contain formatting anomalies and often are very difficult to edit.
The default is to include markup in printed/PDF output. Use File> Print then click the PDF button at the bottom of the Print dialog. If the markup isn't shown in the Quick Preview open the Copies & Pages list & select Microsoft Word. Then open the Print What list & select Document showing markup.

Apr 1, 2014 · Word is not a PDF viewer. The latest Word versions 2013/365 will convert PDF files (that are convertible) to Word format but the format is hit or miss. To view PDF files open them in a PDF viewer of which Adobe Reader is the industry standard. Associate PDF files with Adobe Reader rather than Word to make this happen normally.
Whenever Word opens a file that isn't a native Word file type, a conversion occurs. There is no way around that. But I guess you are saying that you don't want PDFs to automatically open in Word? In that case, do the following: Right-click on the icon for a PDF file. On the context menu, click Open With, and then click Choose Default Program.
