The division’s focus extends to biodiversity valuation of marine ecosystems along the Indian coast, assessing the impacts of fishing on biodiversity, research on threatened taxa and fragile ecosystems like coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove stands, and developing restoration protocols for these ecosystems.

During the first half of the five decades of its existence, the CMFRI devoted its research attention towards the estimation of marine fisheries landings and effort, taxonomy of marine organisms and the bio-economic characteristics of the exploited stocks of finfish and shellfish.
In order to provide access to the institute’s technologies and know how, the CMFRI organises following types of need based training programme for the benefit of farmers, researchers, academicians, administrators, students on various aspects of marine fisheries and mariculture.
Guidelines for admission of college/university students for pursuing project/dissertation work at CMFRI, Kochi Eligibility: Student must be pursuing postgraduate courses from a recognized University/ Institute /college in the relevant area.

In a groundbreaking initiative to popularise marine biodiversity education, the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) will organize a Fish Walk in Kochi. Similar to popular bird watching, the Fish Walk will offer the public and students a hands-on opportunity to learn about fish and marine biodiversity in the region.
The Institute has a unique historical database of over 9 million catch and effort data records from all maritime states of India. ICAR-CMFRI also conducted the first ever holistic assessment of marine fish stocks of India using micro-analytical methods, in which 135 stocks were assessed and 91.1% found to be healthy.
