The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute was established by Government of India on February 3rd 1947 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and later it joined the ICAR family in 1967.
Nov 30, 2023 · In 2022, the total marine fish landings along the coast of India’s mainland were approximately 3.49 million tonnes, indicating a 14.53% increase compared to 2021. The year saw a significant rise of 28.02% in fish landings compared to the pandemic-affected year of 2020.
Tamil Nadu leads the tally with 5.59 lakh tonnes contributing 20.5% of the total landings. Gujarat with 5.32 lakh tonnes (19.4% of total, 30% decrease); Karnataka with 3.75 lakh tonnes (13.74% of total, 25% decrease); and Kerala with 3.6 lakh tonnes (13.2% of total, 33.8% decrease).
Dec 22, 2020 · In 2019, marine fish landings was valued at Rs.60,881 crores at landing Centre and Rs.92356 crores at retail Centre. CMFRI prepared and published minimum legal size proposals for resources of Tamil Nadu (113 species) and Maharashtra (58 species).
The division’s focus extends to biodiversity valuation of marine ecosystems along the Indian coast, assessing the impacts of fishing on biodiversity, research on threatened taxa and fragile ecosystems like coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove stands, and developing restoration protocols for these ecosystems.
