Apr 16, 2014 · It does the same thing as the command "tput clear", which is looking up the escape code for the current terminal type and sending that string to standard output. The terminal receiving the escape code from clear/tput interprets it and executes the command sent, such as clearing the local display. "terminal" means the local console or a terminal session (putty, xterm, etc.), possibly via ssh or telnet.
The things you say about sync are wrong: according to the linux doc, writting to drop_cache will only clear clean content (already synced). Besides, even if it drops unsynced data, saying that typing the sync command just before clearing cache would save your data is wrong: there is a non zero time between the sync command drop_cache write, so any data could be added during this time lapse.

Feb 5, 2022 · If you mean undo, then there is ★nothing. Except, you can go through the command history and re-run a command. If the command is idempotent, then you will get the same result. Footnotes: ★ nothing unless you use some sort of logging system. This logging may be part of a terminal program, or separate. It is not part of the kernel called Linux.
