The Government of Tamil Nadu created a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for implementing the Chennai Metro Rail Project. This SPV named as “Chennai Metro Rail Limited” was incorporated on 03.12.2007 under the Companies Act.

Chennai Metro Phase 2 project with 3 new lines totaling 116.1 km was approved by the Tamil Nadu government in 2019 at an estimated cost of Rs. 69,180 crore. Since then, the cost has been revised down to Rs 61,843 crore by reducing station sizes.
