Dec 10, 2017 · The day usually starts at midnight, so "before Dec 10 midnight" usually is the same as "before Dec 10". "Before Dec 09 - 23:59:59" excludes one second. But people using such deadlines may see this differently.
Jan 5, 2018 · Worse still, the change in the date doesn't occur then, but occurs one hour earlier, between 11:59 pm (one minute before midnight) on one day and one minute after midnight on the next day. The only way I can see to make sense of this, viewed as a conventional mixed-radix place-value system, is to treat the 12 in "12 o'clock" as a special convention for the way to write a zero in that place.

Aug 2, 2016 · The use of by midnight does change with I will be happy. Again the phrase gives the latest possible time by which the person will be happy. He could start to be happy one second after he says the sentence, or he could start to be happy at 23:59:59 (one second before midnight).
Oct 8, 2023 · Favourite would be a plain 'midnight', if context disambiguated, as it normally would: Hello, John. You've made good time getting home. I wasn't waiting up for you; I started to read a new book around midnight as I didn't feel at all tired. If absolutely necessary to add clarity, I'd use 'midnight just gone'. The news came through at midnight ...
Dec 9, 2014 · If the restaurant closes after midnight, then the doors shut at 12:01am or later. Colloquially, I would also say: "The restaurant doesn't close until midnight" - but note there the focus is on the time before midnight, not midnight itself. I would also say, the restaurant doesn't close until 11pm.
