Annie Besant was born in London to an Irish-origin family as Annie Wood. Besant's father died when she was five years old, leaving her family impoverished.Her education was paid for by her mother's friend. Besant was instilled with a strong sense of social responsibility from a young age. She had a strong sense of self-sufficiency.She married a vicar, Frank Besant, when she was 20 years old.
