Youtube's WEBM videos are usually encoded using the VP9 codec which is a much more efficient and newer codec which allows to compress video better (which means a smaller file size) while providing a perceptually better image quality.
Mar 29, 2016 · @s4y youtube-dl will indeed transcode when it needs to (--audio-format option) but you are right here: it should not be the case with that line, because you are forcing youtube-dl to download two files (bestaudio[ext=mp4] and bestvideo[ext=m4a]) that have the same kind of container in common (mp4), so whatever their content, when remuxing it, they will be stacked in another mp4 without any transcoding required.

Calculate the bitrate you need by dividing your target size (in bits) by the video length (in seconds). For example for a target size of 1 GB (one giga byte, which is 8 giga bits) and 10 000 seconds of video (2 h 46 min 40 s), use a bitrate of 800 000 bit/s (800 kbit/s): ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -b 800k output.mp4.
May 26, 2021 · Yeah, sacrificing some amount of quality during transcoding is what I was expecting. I guess I figured that YouTube’s way of doing things must be a bit bloated and there must be a way to have youtube-dl tell ffmpeg to make the video a bit more economical when transcoding, even at the same resolution (like the way JPEG encoding works, with its different levels of compression),
Jul 4, 2019 · youtube-dl provides another two separate parameters, --write-info-json and --skip-download If you just use --write-info-json you'll get the json written but also the video, which is not wanted If you just use --skip-download you'll get nothing downloaded
Jul 21, 2019 · I see there are videos on youtube with 1080p resolution that are more than 10 minutes long and only 50-60 mb in size. I have a video only 3 minutes long and only 720p resolution but unable to bring it down below 90mb in size. I checked another answer here on reducing size. Tried changing bitrate using ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -b 1000000 output.mp4
Apr 4, 2022 · Or you should overlay the split video (newVideo.mp4) into a background video which should have a black background, 60 seconds duration, and a 9/16 ratio. This is ffmpeg command to do the magic ;) I used a full HD video and I overlaid the video in the center.
