The Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding was erstwhile started in the name of Agricultural Botany at Agricultural College in Karnataka University Dharwad in the year 1947 to impart knowledge on crop improvement through teaching, research and extension activities.

The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1998 during which the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri H.D. Deve Gowda and Late Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, a renowned agriculture scientist were the Chief Guests.
