SJR also has a bunch of corrections to reduce discipline-specific differences in citation practices and a way of weighting certain citations more highly (based on the prestige/impact of source). While I think SJR is much better than impact factor, this might not change within discipline rankings too much because most of these differences between metrics address discipline-level differences.
Jun 23, 2015 · This is the main reason why journal rankings based on the H-index usually deviates quite alot from ranking based on avarage-based metrics (such as the Impact factor and SJR). When using the H-index to rank journals a small top-journal within a field (based on article impact) can be surpassed by large journals.
The Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) only considers documents published in the journal in the last three years, and weights them depending on the prestige of the journals the citing papers were published in. The idea is that a citation is "worth more" if it's from (what SJR determines to be) a highly prestigious journal.

Feb 9, 2022 · Scopus' CiteScore is closer to the "naïve" impact factor calculations; Scimago's SJR is weighted by the "prestige" of the source the article was cited at. The comparison between different metrics could be found e.g. here. Like Jon Custer stated in the comments, they are just different (and, I might add, rather arbitrary!) ways to compare journals.

Mar 29, 2021 · A lot of papers in my field are published in MDPI journals (higher ranking ones like Sensors and Materials). Most editors of those journals are respected and renowned experts. I have published there myself, and as other have stated, the process was smooth and in many aspects very much like with other, more "reputable" journals.
