The shehnai, often referred to in English as an oboe, is a musical instrument originating from the Indian subcontinent. It is made of wood, with a double reed at one end and a metal or wooden flared bell at the other end.
“The name ‘shehnai’ comes from the Persian ‘shah’ (king) and ‘nai/ney’ (wind-blown instrument). In other words, it is either ‘the king of flutes’ or ‘a flute fit for kings’…A double-reed instrument, the shehnai has 7 to 9 holes, with the last two often left open and used for tuning.
The legacy of the Shehnai has endured through the ages, leaving an indelible mark on Indian music and culture. Its influence can be heard not only in classical compositions but also in contemporary film scores, fusion music, and popular songs.
