Jun 5, 2021 · Scheduled Tribes (STs) in India refer to the various indigenous communities or tribes that are recognized by the government for special protection and assistance. The Scheduled Tribes are listed in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Article 366 (25) defined scheduled tribes as "such tribes or tribal communities or parts of or groups within such tribes or tribal communities as are deemed under Article 342 to be Scheduled Tribes for the purposes of this constitution".
The Fifth Schedule of the Constitution deals with the administration and control of scheduled areas and scheduled tribes in many states except the four states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes is vested with the duty to participate and advise in the planning process of socio-economic development of STs, and to evaluate the progress of their development under the Union and any State.

Indian tribes are spread over all the States and Union Territories of India except for Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Pondicherry and National Capital Territory of Delhi. There are 705 ethnic groups notified as Scheduled Tribes according to the constitution of India.
Castes & Scheduled Tribes was renamed as the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, consisting of a Chairperson and not more than 11 other Members. This Resolution also demarcated the
Primitiveness, geographical isolation, shyness and social, educational & economic backwardness due to these reasons are the traits that distinguish Scheduled Tribe communities of our country from other communities. It takes into account the definitions of tribal Communities adopted in the 1931 Census.
