Project Gutenberg was the first provider of free electronic books, or eBooks. Michael Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg, invented eBooks in 1971 and his memory continues to inspire the creation of eBooks and related content today.
Project Gutenberg’s bookshelves are hand-curated collections of eBooks that have similar topics. Bookshelf listings were created by volunteers, and have not been updated since 2020 so there are many books without these hand-curated bookshelf categories.
Fortunately almost all Project Gutenberg eBooks are free of charge and free as in freedom for readers within the United States (if you are not in the United States, you will need to determine what copyright law protects where you are located).
