This is a comparison I made in 1.20.4 between OptiFine and Sodium. Normally when moving around, building, etc. in Optifine I normally get around 600-800 FPS. When I try on Sodium I get around 145-300 FPS. When loading new chunks in Optifine, I get around 500-700 FPS but when I'm on Sodium I get around 50-80 FPS.

Preview versions are the versions of Optifine released for testing in a player’s view so the devs can easily find bugs and fix/patch the bugs. The only thing that optifine is better is pbr texture packs and custom entities. In most cases iris + sodium is better option. pretty sure there's mods on fabric that achieve those same features. Feb 14, 2024 · Optifine for 1.20.4 does not work with Forge as of yet. The only way to add it to a vanilla instance is; Versions tab, Add to Minecraft.jar then select the downloaded Optifine jar file, don't extract it. That being said, unless there is a specific reason that you must use Optifine, then either try: Forge with Embeddium, add Oculus for shaders.
