Since we can not directly use the table, since the table values represent the area to the left of the z score, we will have to use a different formula. P(z >= 3.9) = 1 - P(z <= 3.9), This means we are going subtract the area under the curve that is to the left of the z score 3.9 from 1 and the difference is the area under the curve to the right of the z score 3.9.
To get $\Phi^{-1}(.25)$, it depends on the table that you have and what your instructor told you to do. I usually hear find the closest value. I usually hear find the closest value. Many tables are defined differently.
Mar 25, 2019 · Under any normal density curve, the area between $\mu \pm \sigma$ is about 68% of the entire area. (As the horizontal scale, indicated by $\sigma,$ increases, the height of the curve decreases.) For the standard normal distribution the interval $\mu \pm \sigma$ has length $2$ and the distribution reaches a maximum height of about 0.4.
$\begingroup$ There should be tables for the CDF of the (standard) normal distribution in the usual statistics textbooks... $\endgroup$ – J. M. ain't a mathematician Commented May 14, 2012 at 18:07
Oct 22, 2020 · The reason is that the so-called best-fitting normal distribution does not match the binomial distribution as closely as one might like. It is often useful to know about the normal approximation to binomial distributions, but it would be a pity to use standardization and printed normal tables, only to get a pretty good approximation of normal curve of mediochre fit.
Dec 29, 2018 · In a past exam of my stats class, the question requires finding the value of a normal CDF corresponding to a Z score of 3 DP. However, we are only given a table that is accurate to 2 DP. We are not allowed to use calculator.
Oct 14, 2014 · For a recent history test, scores follow the normal distribution with a mean of 70 points. 80% of the students scored below 88 points. What is the standard deviation of the scores? I have done a lot of research into the question and eventually broke down and used the standard table. The answer I got through that was a std of 21.387.
Oct 15, 2015 · Errors distr. estimation is considered to use t-distr with fatter tails than Normal distr., but with increasing size of sample errors distr. can achieve the Normal Distr. -- see t-tables & z-tables in linked-pdf - there're multipliers for all needs - e.g. for 98% - 2.33 etc

Arguments against this seems to be that the right-hand half of the table gets bigger and bigger while the left-hand side remains constant tending to the factorial numbers. On the other hand by plotting the values of the first few rows it looks like a normal distribution. Edit 4.2.2012: The Mathematica 8 program for the table is:
