At the age of 18 she left home to join a religious community, the Sisters of Loretta. She was sent to India for her novitiate and took her solemn vows in 1937. In 1950 she was given permission to establish her own community of nuns, the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa died in 1997 and was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.
