Debt Recovery Tribunal is a quasi-judicial body formed under the RDDBFI Act, 1993 to recover loans by banks and financial institutions. It has jurisdiction over whole of India except Jammu and Kashmir and has 39 tribunals and 5 appellate tribunals.

The Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) system in India was introduced as a response to the growing issue of Non-performing Assets (NPAs) and the need for a dedicated mechanism to resolve disputes related to debt recovery. The Recovery of Debts Due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 1993 (RDDBFI Act) led to the establishment of DRTs.

Nov 8, 2023 · The High Court of Delhi held that the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) cannot entertain a claim below Rs.10 lakhs under the Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act. The ruling clarified that the remedy under the SARFAESI Act is not independent of the Recovery of Debts and Bankruptcy Act (RDB Act) and the pecuniary limit of Rs.20 lakhs applies.
