In 1846 Ripon College opened for women and in 1974 the two colleges merged to form the College of Ripon and York St John.
York St John University descends from two Anglican teacher training colleges, which were founded in York in 1841 (for men) and 1846 (for women). It was awarded university status in 2006 and is located on a single campus in the historic city of York. It currently has around 6,500 students enrolled.
