The Barge is a breakwater built to protect the house and terraces from waves. It was playfully designed to look like a boat. James Deering commissioned all of the sculptures from American artist Alexander Stirling Calder in 1915. The local limestone that covers the Barge is soft and porous.

The Vizcaya Café and Shop is located on the north side of the Main House, next to the Swimming Pool Grotto and across from the Orchidarium. Visitors can enjoy grab-and-go food options and beverages as well as shop for gifts inspired by Vizcaya’s architecture, gardens and collections.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens seeks an undergraduate student to assist with research of historic objects and furnishings in Vizcaya’s decorated rooms and formal gardens that will inform collection-based projects but may also assist with different aspects of exhibition coordination in support of the Contemporary Arts Program (CAP).
