The New Brunswick Museum was officially incorporated as the “Provincial Museum” in 1929 and received its current name in 1930. Its history, however, can be traced back another 87 years to 1842, when Gesner’s Museum of Natural History opened to the public in Saint John.

The scientific collections of the New Brunswick Museum are the result of more than a century and a half of collection and study. From our beginning in 1842 as Gesner’s Museum of Natural History the collections have grown from 2,173 items listed in Gesner's catalogue to more than 300,000 natural history specimens.

Archives and Research Library. New Brunswick Museum prepares for move out of Douglas Avenue Facility. Effective Monday, October 23rd 2023, NBM staff will begin the process of moving the collections from Douglas Avenue to the temporary space at Lancaster Avenue.
