Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI) established in the year 1972, is a functional autonomous body jointly managed by Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Cancer Society, affliated to B J Medical College. It is also a Regional Cancer Centre of Government of India and getting assistance under National Cancer Control Programme.

The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI) is now the State Cancer Institute (SCI) recognized by Govt. of India for the state of Gujarat with additional benefits and added responsibility by extending support to tertiary cancer centres (TCC) coming under GCRI.
Data from Ahmedabad urban cancer registry indicates that the prevalence of cancer among male and female is 116 and 85 cases per one lakh population respectively. By 2030, cancer burden will rise extensively, and therefore there is need to formulate and organise to overcome the forthcoming problem.

The department runs DM medical oncology super-specialty course attached to BJ medical college and Gujarat University. The course started in 1991 with intake of 4 students per year which has increased to 10 students per year from 2010-19 and 9 students per year 2020 onwards
