  2. 9. I'm from Germany and in German both translate to the same word (kaum). I'd like to know the difference between these two words, hardly and barely. I would also sometimes translate kaum as "scarcely". Related. It's barely 1mpg worse than the other one! The 25mpg is hardly worse than the 26mpg of the other one!

'Nearly' is definitely not a synonym: it means "almost but not quite" whereas barely means "by the smallest margin". @jbeldock: there are no exact synonyms. 'nearly' and 'barely' are synonyms, just with nuances in different directions.

  4. Apr 29, 2018 · Isn't the "pre" unneeded? Wouldn't it be better to say, "First, define the rules…"? Is there way that "predefine" can be used that makes sense and is preferable to "define"? Is predefine a word? It's gets the squiggly red underline in my browser. Merriam Webster barely lists it online, only under predefined.
