Nov 26, 2021 · Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh have emerged as the poorest states in India, according to Niti Aayog's first Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report. As per the index, 51.91 per cent population of Bihar is poor, followed by 42.16 per cent in Jharkhand, 37.79 per cent in Uttar Pradesh.

May 5, 2022 · "After 30 years of rule by Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad, Bihar is the poorest and most backward state in India. If Bihar wants to develop, it can't walk on the path it has been walking for the last 10-15 years. It needs a new direction," Prashant Kishor said during a press conference in Patna.
That Bihar is among the poorest states in the country is well known. Its per capita GSDP in 2022-23, the latest year for which this number is available, was ₹ 35,118 at constant prices.
