May 18, 2021 · Our list of the top Somerset seaside towns would not be complete without Burnham-on-Sea! Clevedon. The final inclusion to our list of the best Somerset seaside towns is Clevedon. Clevedon is a stunning Victorian seaside town sitting snuggly on the Severn Estuary. The town boasts some truly excellent scenery.
- Glastonbury in Somerset. The rolling hills of Glastonbury attract many visitors, especially in summer. This typical English town has a lot to offer beyond the annual Glastonbury Festival.
- Taunton in Somerset. Only 20 minutes southwest of Glastonbury is Taunton. It’s a little bigger than Glastonbury and houses the Museum of Somerse t, with over 400 million years of history.
- Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset. Located right on the coast, Burnham-on-Sea was a small fishing village until the 18th century. That changed when the seaside resort start gaining attention and rose in popularity.
- Cheddar in Somerset. Cheddar is a popular village in Somerset, thanks to it having England’s highest inland cliffs and magnificent caves. Surprisingly, given its size and popularity, Cheddar is still a village and not a town yet, but we couldn’t write this list and not include it.

- Weston-super-Mare Beach. A popular family-friendly beach in striking distance of Bristol, Weston-super-Mare Beach has buckets of fun for all ages. Sprawling two miles along the Bristol Channel, this beach is expansive, and it’s landmarked by attractions like the famous pier and the popular Revo Kitchen restaurant.
- Uphill Beach. Sitting at the end of Weston-super-Mare beach (and the official start of the Mendip Way), I personally prefer Uphill. It’s a much quieter beach than Weston’s main sprawl – especially during the summer months – and while swimming here still isn’t advised (bad water quality and tidal difference still come into play!)
- Clevedon Beach. One of the closest beaches to Bristol, Clevedon is a pebbly affair that runs from the Victorian-esque coastal suburb. It sits along the River Severn, which means that the currents are quite strong and the tidal difference is vast (similar to Weston-super-Mare).
- Portishead Beach. Beautiful Portishead is famous for its charming harbour, with ocean-based family-friendly attractions including an outdoor swimming pool and boating lake.
