"The Astronaut" is a song by South Korean singer-songwriter Jin, member of the South Korean boy band BTS, and British rock band Coldplay. It is Jin's debut solo single outside BTS and was released on 28 October 2022. The song marks the second collaboration between Jin and Coldplay, as BTS previously worked together with the band on "My Universe", the second single of Music of the Spheres (2021). Coldplay have songwriting and performance credits on the song, with Chris Martin and his son Moses also providing backing vocals.

"The Astronaut" was produced by Norwegian DJ Kygo and Coldplay's long-time producer Bill Rahko, with the former also sharing writing credits. Described as “a gift to fans”, it was released ahead of Jin's military enlistment, which occurred shortly afterwards. A music video teaser was scheduled for 26 October, with the full-length video premiering on the 28th. A lyric video followed on the 30th.

Following their collaboration on Coldplay's "My Universe" in 2021, BTS has developed a close friendship with the band since, particularly Jin, after Chris Martin autographed and gifted him one of his personal acoustic guitars during the single's promotional rollout.

In anticipation of his mandatory military enlistment in South Korea in late 2022, which would keep him away from the music industry for two years, Jin asked Chris in April for a song that would say “goodbye to everybody for a little while, and tells them I love them.” Whilst working on their original version of "The Astronaut", Coldplay decided to collaborate with Jin and gifted him the song, only replacing Chris' lead vocals for Jin's and the original English lyrics of the verses with new Korean lyrics written by Jin.

On 15 October 2022, at the end of BTS' free concert World Expo 2030 Busan Korea Concert in Busan, Jin revealed that he would be the next band member after J-Hope to release an official solo work. Addressing the audience, he stated, “It's not a huge album or anything, it's just a single. I was able to work together with someone that I'd always really liked, so I'll be releasing a new song.” The following day, BTS' label, Big Hit Music, posted a notice confirming BTS would be moving ahead with plans to fulfill their mandatory military service and that Jin would be the first member to enlist following the completion of promotions for his solo release.

Several articles subsequently published by Korean news media reported that the song was gifted to Jin by Coldplay and would be released at the end of the month, despite Big Hit not having provided any details about the single at the time. Initial statements from the label in response to all the speculation neither confirmed nor denied the reports, with the company only saying that details would be provided at a later date — it eventually confirmed the month-end date to Newsen and YTN.
