HER2 is so named because it has a similar structure to human epidermal growth factor receptor, or HER1. Neu is so named because it was derived from a rodent glioblastoma cell line, a type of neural tumor.
HER2 is a membrane tyrosine kinase and oncogene that is overexpressed and gene amplified in about 20% of breast cancers. When activated it provides the cell with potent proliferative and anti-apoptosis signals and it is the major driver of tumor development and progression for this subset of breast cancer.

Summary. Human epidermal growth factor receptors (HER/ erb B) constitute a family of four cell surface receptors involved in transmission of signals controlling normal cell growth and differentiation. A range of growth factors serve as ligands, but none is specific for the HER2 receptor.
This human gene encodes a protein that has a structure consistent with a growth factor receptor and has been designated HER2, due to its similarity to the human epidermal growth factor receptor [2, 3]. The HER2 receptor has an important role in normal cell growth and differentiation.
