Sep 7, 2010 · A standard 78 groove requires about a 3 mil stylus whereas a micro-groove rquires about a 1 mil. So yes, the standard grooves of a 78 are about three times as wide as a micro-groove. If you try to use a 1 mil stylus on a 78, the tip of the stylus will hit the bottom of the groove, resulting in poor sound quality and a lot of noise.
