2. Apply for a temporary teaching certificate
Before you can apply for your temporary teaching certificate, many states require you to take a subject area exam showing your knowledge in the area for which you plan to teach. For example, if you have a bachelor's degree in English and would like to teach high school level English, you would take the English six to 12 subject area exam. Each exam has a different number of questions and an allotted amount of time to complete the test.Many educators who have taken a subject area exam recommend buying study materials for your particular test and becoming familiar with the types of questions you might see during the exam. During this time, it's essential to complete an accredited teacher preparation program so that you can become eligible for a professional certificate before the temporary certificate expires. You can finish many programs in a year if you take full-time classes, which you can take in the evenings or on weekends.
