Martel is a commune in the Lot department in southwestern France. [3] It is a small medieval town in a region well known for its walnuts and truffles. It is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France) Association.

Martel is a pretty town on the banks of the Dordogne river in the Lot department. Its skyline has many medi-eval towers and is quite unique. The town developed due to its strategic location at the crossroads of the important wine and salt trade routes between Paris and Toulouse.

From Martel you can travel on a steam train to Saint-Denis; a 13km round trip on the edge of a cliff about 80m high and so offering some fabulous views over the Haut-Quercy countryside. This is known locally as the "Truffadou" for the truffles for which Martel was once famous. The train runs from April until early Novemeber.
The town, unusually for these parts, didn't begin as a religious centre or a castrum (military defensive site).
