May 1, 2015 · Some games will keep your save data in a separate folder such as your documents folder on your computer, which means you shouldn't lose the data in those cases when you uninstall. I also believe the Steam Cloud feature sure work on most titles in terms of keeping your save data.

Savefiles are usually saved in my documents instead of the game directory, so even if you uninstall a game or steam they should be safe. Note that some games use other locations like the AppData folder to store savefiles, e.g. Mafia 2.
