Jul 3, 2018 · If you must put it before the noun, "thousands-of-years-long events" would be best. The typical pattern is to put hyphens between all of the elements of the modifier (aside from certain adverbs that may come at the start, like very or -ly adverbs) but not between the modifier and the modified noun.

However, Words Into Type says, "If there is scarcely any possibility of misreading, hyphens need not be used." Apr 4, 2019 · 2. +1 Note that the purpose behind using hyphens is only to provide clarity. If they actually make something less comprehensible, then they should be omitted. Of the three versions you list, 2+ unit buildings causes the least amount of confusion.
I'm confused about how to combine an open-form compound word with a word that would normally be hyphenated. There's excellent guidance for making the open vs. closed vs. hyphenated decision, but I don't see how to apply this when hyphenating the open-form word looks wrong. For example, make a compound word out of North, America, and based.
