Alpha Mask is also commonly used. Clicking on the logo's background while holding down the Shift key, then pressing the Delete key works.

Jun 20, 2006 · Posted June 20, 2006. You must select the color (while holding shift with the magic wand tool), wich should be transparent and delete it, if you open a gif. Then save it again and you'll have got a transparency in the picture! Greets. Flo.
May 30, 2018 · 17. Posted August 15, 2018. The Magic Wand approach is a bad way to make the background transparent for a black-on-white image like the snail drawing. Do as @Joshua Lamusga suggests: use a plugin that converts white to transparent, such as Switch Gray to Alpha or Color Clearer.

The closer a pixel's color is to the chosen color, the more transparent it will become. This can be used, for example, to change the background color of an image. I took this image as an example:

I want to remove the white background, leaving the black text on a transparent background. I have tried both the Recolor and Eraser tools, but am getting nowhere.

The Transparency - Alpha slider is the one that affects the transparency of the currently selected color. 255 = fully opaque, 0 = fully transparent. Note that transparency is indicated by the grey & white checkerboard pattern.
