    • 1. Count of Bivar (c. 1043–99), Spanish soldier; born Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. A champion of Christianity against the Moors, in 1094 he captured Valencia, which he went on to rule. He is immortalized in the Spanish Poema del Cid (12th century) and in Corneille's play Le Cid (1637).
