SMAP, or Soil Moisture Active Passive, is an Earth satellite mission that measures and maps Earth's soil moisture and freeze/thaw state to better understand terrestrial water, carbon and energy cycles.
Nov 7, 2024 · The NASA-USDA Global soil moisture data provides soil moisture information across the globe at 0.25°x0.25°spatial resolution. These data sets include: surface and subsurface soil moisture (mm), soil moisture profile (%), surface and subsurface soil moisture anomalies (-).
This NASA SPoRT-LIS soil moisture map shows the moisture content of the top 100 cm of soil compared to historical conditions (1981–2013), based on the Noah unified land surface model. Red and orange hues indicate drier soils, while greens and blues indicate greater soil moisture.
This map relies on remotely sensed soil moisture data derived from NASA missions to assess soil moisture conditions across the lower 48 U.S. states. Brown hues indicate below-average soil moisture, and blue hues indicate above-average soil moisture.
The International Soil Moisture Network is an international cooperation to establish and maintain a global in-situ soil moisture database. This database is an essential means for validating and improving global satellite products, and land surface, climate, and hydrological models.
Dec 13, 2019 · NOAA NESDIS Global Soil Moisture Data Products Portal: Data products of land surface and deeper layer soil moisture are critical inputs for numerical models for weather, seasonal and inter-annual climate, hydrological, and agricultural predictions.
Soil moisture maps: depicting soil moisture totals, percentiles, anomalies and change. Soil moisture GIS data: FTP link to GIS data for soil moisture totals, percentiles and anomalies via FTP
Dec 9, 2008 · NOAA Soil Moisture from TMI: Land surface soil moisture retrieved from the X-band brightness temperature (TB10H) observations of the Tropical Rainfall Monitoring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) using the Single-Channel-Retrieval (SCR) algorithm.
Using the GRACE-FO based moisture conditions as a starting point, NASA scientists forecast groundwater and soil moisture wetness or drought 1, 2, and 3 months into the future. The model is driven into the future using downscaled seasonal meteorological forecasts from NASA’s GEOS-5 Earth system model.
