In the example: Travel the length and breadth of the country. Length refers to north/south (head-to-toe), and breadth refers to east/west (side-to-side).
Breadth and width refer to related but subtly different things. The problem is, I think, that different people will interpret these differently, and any response you get it likely to be more about opinion than precept.

Jul 6, 2021 · The spelling "breadth" is to some extent thus a holdover from the etymology rather than a reflection of pronunciation, and serves the further purpose of distinguishing it from "breath". If you're asking from a listener's point of view, you definitely should, when hearing /breθ/, take (contingent on context) "breadth" as a possibility as to what they mean.
