  3. Bermondsey Street began as a causeway across low lying land crisscrossed by watercourses and ditches. Just to the south of the river Thames, it led to the Cluniac Priory of St Saviour. Founded at the end of the 11th century, the Priory was a popular place of pilgrimage and had an extensive precinct.
