With LCD you have a permanent non-controllable backlight illuminating the screen, and it's up to the liquid in the LCD to try and block out all the light to achieve black.

That's a 50/50 chance. I'm a little bit worried that with my luck I'll receive a dud right off the bat.

Going even farther back you can see that it is a normal problem with notebook displays.
