Although the app loads and seems to work fine the “live” feature doesn’t automatically go active. in order to get this working you manually have to REMOVE all your contacts from the map. And stop sharing your location. Restart your phone.

Even though your Apple ID might be protected by 2-Factor Authentications, all you need to access Find My Device service at iCloud.com is your Apple ID and password. This said, it looks like someone knew or guess your Apple ID and password. Changing the password was the right decision.
